About Colorado Springs

Where the plains meet the Rockies

Colorado Springs sits at the foot of Pikes Peak, a little over a mile high, with red rock parks, mountain towns and a lot of sunshine close at hand. These are the places most visitors want on their list.

Free to visit

Garden of the Gods

Towering red sandstone formations in a city park. Walk the paved central loop or hike the quieter trails on the edges. Early morning is the best time to go.

Must see

Pikes Peak

At more than 14,000 feet, the view that inspired "America the Beautiful." Drive the Pikes Peak Highway or ride the Cog Railway up from Manitou Springs.

Near The Broadmoor

Seven Falls

A series of waterfalls in a narrow granite canyon, with a stairway alongside for anyone who wants to climb to the top.

Great for kids

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

A zoo built into the side of the mountain, with views over the whole city. Kids love hand-feeding the giraffes.

Mountain town

Manitou Springs

A small town just west of the city with natural mineral springs, local shops and the famously steep Manitou Incline.

Food and shops

Old Colorado City

The city's historic district, with local restaurants, galleries and an easy pace. A good stop for an afternoon or an evening out.

When to visit

Every season works here

The weather changes quickly at altitude, so pack layers any time of year.

Summer

Warm days and afternoon storms. The best time for rafting, paddleboarding and high-country trips. Book popular activities ahead.

Fall

Cool mornings, golden aspens in the nearby mountains, and fewer crowds. Many locals say it's the best time of year.

Winter

More sun than you'd expect, with quiet trails and snow on the peaks. Great for hiking on clear days.

Spring

Mild days mixed with the occasional snow. Good value and a relaxed pace before summer picks up.

Trip questions

Good to know before you go

Why does the trip planner ask for my email?

So we can send you your itinerary. That's the only email you'll get. We don't add you to a mailing list.

How many days do I need in Colorado Springs?

Three to four days lets you see Garden of the Gods, get up Pikes Peak, and fit in a guided adventure or two without rushing. A long weekend still covers the highlights.

When is the best time to visit?

Summer is the busiest season and the best for water and high-country activities. September and October bring cooler days, fewer crowds and fall color. Winter is sunny and quiet, and spring is a good value if you pack layers.

How should I prepare for the altitude?

Colorado Springs sits a little over 6,000 feet above sea level and Pikes Peak tops 14,000 feet. Drink more water than usual, wear sunscreen, and keep your first day on the lighter side.

Is Garden of the Gods free?

Yes. Garden of the Gods Park is a free public park. Arrive early in summer for easier parking and softer morning light.
